Obesity is a terrorist that does not work alone!

“Obesity is a terrorist that does not work alone!” <- Tweet This! - Don't be a twit

Depression and Obesity work together to take over your life and destroy you! You have to declare war on terror and fight back! The only way to defeat obesity is to lose weight, which is hard when you are depressed; but you can combat depression everyday.

Since I spoke to the recruiters at the beginning of this month I have been depressed and that has set me back. I know I need to lose weight and to reach my goals, but I had convinced myself that my goals were not worth the fight anymore since everything keeps getting in the way. It took me almost a full month to get over this depression.

What makes depression bad

If you Google what is depression you get two definitions
  1. Severe despondency and dejection, typically felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy
  2. The act of lowering something or pressing something down.

So what does all that mean?

While if you translate definition one from geek speak to Standard English it says Severe sadness felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.

That is a little easier to track but still could use some clarification to explain why it is bad. To assist in this clarification I will use the example from my own life

I have been sad over the last 2-3 weeks because I am inadequate (not good enough) for the SEALs and my ability to do what I want seems more and more hopeless.

This is bad because it caused me to not want to do anything and become complacent. I have felt like I can never do anything better than my current job, despite my bosses boss thinking I am good enough for a promotion.

I stopped exercising, I stopped eating right, I stopped trying!

I had fun at my National Guard experience, and despite this I put myself in a state of perpetual failure.

How did I overcome this?

I was talking to my best friend that I have known since the second grade via text message while I was bored at work and his failed attempt to motivate me didn’t quite fail!

I commented to him that I was depressed to which he responded:
“Don't be depressed you can always go for corrections with me.”
I was like:
"How is that supposed to make me depressed? Instead of moving out of Arizona, seeing the world, shooting at evil, and generally just being awesome. You get to stay in Arizona be overheated and an overpaid babysitter.”
He of course took offence and said that I should slit my wrists now if I am going to think like that. Drama Queen!

I told him to think about it:
“If I were to become a corrections officer I could be a corrections officer or a supervisor of correction officers. If I were to go into the military I could be a helicopter mechanic, helicopter pilot, or I could go into some sort of computer field like cryptology or network security. Someday I could get vision correction surgery and become a jet pilot.”
At that point I realized that I was being stupid and that even if I can’t be a SEAL I can still be awesome, that I should not be giving up just because a physical issue pushed me out of my goal.

My Advice

Talk to someone: A true friend will never turn you away!
Anyone: Doctors, Teachers, Counselors, Priests, Mommy, Daddy, Security at Walmart!
Pick up the phone book and dial random numbers till someone is willing to help you if that is what it takes.

Don't give up! DO NOT EAT THAT DOUGHNUT!

Sometimes pushing yourself to be more awesome… to keep striving for the goal even though you cannot obtain it will still keep you motivated and push the depression out.

Keep yourself on track no matter how much you want to give up, cry, or die.

If you give up then the terrorists win!
Do you want to let the terrorists win?

A day late and a dollar short

Well actually a week and three days late and no money short but...

Life can be frustrating sometimes, you crash your new mustang that you have not even had for a year and total it, then you drop your replacement Samsung Galaxy S4 that you have only had for two months in the parking lot of work and crack the screen, to top it all your weight loss has plateaued.

How do you deal with it all?

don't GIVE UP!

I bet most of you did not see the don't.

For the last two weeks or so I have been hoovering between 212 and 215 lbs depending on the time of day and food and water consumption. This has been aggravating because up to this point I had been losing pretty consistently.

FRIDAY MORNING!

I woke up and sprung a leak just like I do everyday then blindly pulled the scale away from the wall and stepped on...

211.8 lbs

Hooah!

Bell hop... down please!

As the day progressed even with eating and drinking regularly I dropped off another 2 lbs ending the day at 209.8.

WHAT?

The next day I weighed in between 210 and 209.9 so my month old scale is working just fine.

However

I would like this scale or one similar to it

Working hard or hardly working

Both - I work hard I push my weight lifting, my run my diet while staying in a safe zone.

leg day used to kill me I would not be able to get in and out of my car; yes my 2008 Ford Mustang sat a lot lower to the ground the my moms Avalon does but still... with out my legs completely killing me. No matter what workout I do, no matter how much weight I lift my legs do not hurt. Same with my arms and chest in the upper body portion. I have only felt one day of core and repeating that exercise routine did not make me feel it again.

I have tried changing my routine to make it so my body does not get bored or complacent or what ever it is that people say happens when your routine does not change. I even tried using some recommendations from the Director of Fitness at the Naval Special Warfare Center and I did not feel that either.

I am not exactly sure what I should do to remedy this:
  • Move up to more sets
  • Push heavier weights
  • Just keep working and build resistance
One thing I know I want to do is buy a weight vest, ankle weights, a medicine ball, and elevation training mask... But I can not afford them.

To add some comedy to an already annoying situation - We maxed out the weight on three machines and almost maxed out two more... I asked my friend what to do next and hes said "Go to another gym" - Stupid year contract.

Final Note:
I am trying to make these posts more interesting and more interactive but I am not exactly sure how. I wanted to make it a video post instead of just a diary entry but I do not have the time to edit the video or equipment that can record good quality HD Video.

Always a Button! Never the Finger!

Whoa! What?

Don't get all catawampus!

It means "Always Depressed! Never the Depressor!"

Your mind is still askew? That's okay I still love you!

The last couple of days have been bad my weight loss has slowed and I am really sore from working out and my feet still hurt from work.

All of this had been making me depressed; but its nothing to worry about I am not going to go all Lizzy Borden and take an ax to my family or commit the hara-kiri even though I do have a very dull set of katana.

What it did mean is that I was not quite as motivated to do push-up or sit-ups or push myself on the most horrible self-torture device ever made! THE ELLIPTICAL MACHINE! Mine is especially horrible because it creaks on the right legs down stroke.

Before the last two days I was able to push myself to go 30 minutes on the elliptical machine without stopping and that was SUPER FUN since one day I forgot to point a fan at me or get a water bottle and my house was at 85 degrees Fahrenheit. I was sweating like a pig on a spit.

I did a few push-ups both days but nothing serious I did not push my-self to do the extra 10 or an extra set. I did not do sit-ups at all and I only did 15 minutes on the elliptical. I think this should have depressed me more since I know I should have been pushing myself but I also know I am not normal I do not do or feel the things normal people do or feel.

Today I was fan-wait-for-it-tastic.

I still only did 15 minutes on the elliptical but I also jumped rope for five minutes and swam for over an hour. I went to the gym in the evening and did ten minutes on a tread mill starting at a slow pace and running my last minute at a 7.5 minute mile. Then I did a bunch of upper body work including assisted pull-ups, bench presses, some kind of weird lift that I do not know what it is called, body weight rows, push-ups, and the most horrible sit-ups I have ever done in my life. I still owe myself 30 push-ups before bed and I may do another 30 sit-ups to put the burn back in my abs; I never feel the burn after a half-hour or so.
I hope my friend has time to go to the gym with me again tomorrow before I have to be at work. If he does then tomorrow is the ever dreaded LEG DAY!

Love you all!

Week 2 Day 3

I love Honey Nut Cheerios, they taste good and they are better for you then most other cereals like captain crunch which has a lot of sugar in it. I remember back when I was younger there were actual nuts on the honey nut cheerios, sadly they are just plain honey cheerios now but I still ate 2 bowls if you go by the recommended serving size on the box.

I have an old pair of pants that barely fit when I weighed 260 pounds, it was the only pair of pants I had clean yesterday when I had to go pick up my son from school. Even pulling these pants up around the largest part of my stomach they still fell down. It felt AWESOME!

After picking up my son from school I had to do some quick exercises because I was called into work early. Working out on my elliptical machine is hard, it hurts my right knee and wobbles really bad, but I still pushed myself to spend fifteen minutes on it while watching NutriVentures which is a show about eating well that my 6 year old likes.

Throughout the day I walked 6685 of 10000 steps burning 353 calories according to the step counter on my phone. Most of this was during work since I was driving last night. I like the days I get to drive because I have a 2008 Ford Mustang Gt and it is so much fun to drive. While I was at work the only time I was able to eat was when I had a break at 9:00 pm and walked over to burger king and got a grilled chicken sandwich, it is not the most healthy thing I could have eaten but it is a lot better then eating any of the fried foods or cheese covered pizza that I have available at work.

After I got home from work I took time to walk across the street to Walmart and bought the items I needed to make my own grilled chicken sandwiches. These were better then the ones from burger king because I use 100% grain wheat buns and a small amount of mayonnaise. Before I went to bed I was able to do 30 push-ups which was difficult because I do not have a lot of strength in my upper arms, However, pushing myself to do the extra push-ups will help build strength.

According to my account on FatSecret.com I burned 3086 calories today while consuming a measly 997 Calories. I burned 2089 Calories more then I took in. According to CalorieCount.about.com I should be consuming 1690 Calories a day to reach my goal weight of 180 lbs by August first. It is not recommended for a male to consume less then 1500 calories a day.

Today I feel tired and headachy, this is probably due to a combination of low caloric intake and elevated blood pressure due to the exercise from yesterday. I have a standing prescription for blood pressure medication that I am considering beginning to take again as it helps with a lot of general body aches as well as headaches and mood.
